I grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The best thing about it was being near the Rockies. My first direct experience with Japan came in University. There were quite a few Japanese students studying ESL (English as a Second Language). I got to know some of them and that's how I became interested in teaching English. In fact, I remember the Japanese word that got me thinking about the differences between languages. The word was 'kokoro' （心）. It is sometimes translated into English as 'heart' or 'mind' or 'spirit' or 'emotions' or 'thoughts'. I found it amazing that one word could have such a wide variety of meanings in English.

I've been teaching in Japan for more than 13 years. I've come to believe that the key to picking up a language is having the mind of a child. Thinking about what you want to say, not how to say it makes all the difference.

私はカナダのカルガリーで育ちました。素晴らしいことには、ロッキー山脈に程近いところだということ。はじめて「日本」と出合ったのは大学生のときです。そこには多くの日本人学生が（英語を第二外国語として）ESLを学んでいました。彼らと知り合いになり、それから英語を教えることに興味を持ち始めたのです。実際に、ある日本の言葉が私に言語の違いを考えさせることになったことを今でも覚えています。それは「心」という単語です。英語へは"heart", "mind", "spirit","emotion","thought" などと翻訳されます。私にとって1つの単語がこんなにたくさんの意味を持つということは驚きでした。

私は日本で13年以上教えています。私は言葉を習得することのキーは、子供のような心をもつことだと信じるようになりました。　どうやって言うかではなく、何を言いたいのか考えてみてください。結果は大きく変わるはずです。

I've been teaching English in Japan for about ten years and generally I really enjoy it. I think teaching the Japanese is a great challenge, because most students are 'false beginners.' This means they know the basics of English from their schooling, but don't know how to use the language correctly.

That means teaching Eikaiwa is 50% concerned with style. I think learning a new language is like learning to dance. You have to get the footwork right first, then you can go onto the complex stuff.

I came to Japan primarily to teach English, but on top of that I wanted to try life in a new exciting environment ( to us gaijin Japan has a very interesting and exotic image) I must admit I've never experienced a country quite so unique as Japan and I did suffer from culture shock for a few months.

My main passions are history and art ( I studied both at university) I'm also trying to learn kanji and can read most posters and ads on the subway. And of course being British I naturally love soccer, although my hometown team ( Nottingham Forest) is currently down in the minor leagues.

What I love about Japan is that it's so easy to have a good time. You go to an all night karaoke place or izakaya or just hang out at home. No one seems to mind what you do. It's great!

私は日本で10年英語を教えていますが、教えることはとても楽しいことです。私は、日本人に教えることは大きなチャレンジだと思っています。というのはほとんどの生徒が"false beginner"(本当の初心者ではない）だからです。たくさんのことを学校で学んできていますが、正しく使うすべは理解していません。

したがって 、"英会話"を教えることは50%はスタイルに関してになります。私は新しい言語を覚えることは新しいダンスを覚えるようなものだと考えています。つまり、まずフットワークを覚えてから、形に入るということです。

英語を教えるために日本に来ましたが、それは新しい環境でいろいろなことを経験するためでもあります。（外国人にとっては日本は興味深くエキゾチックなイメージがあります）私はこんなユニークな国に来たのははじめてで、初めの数ヶ月はカルチャーショックに悩んだものです。

大学では歴史と美術を学びました。　また漢字はこれまでも勉強したので、地下鉄のポスターはほとんど読めます。もちろんイギリス人としてサッカーをこよなく愛しています。（私の地元チーム"Nottingham Forest"は今マイナーリーグに降格していますが・・・）

日本で一番好きなことは、なんでも手軽に楽しめることです。オールナイトカラオケや居酒屋。ただ家でゆっくり自由に好きなように過したり 。　そんなこと、みんな素晴らしいですね。

Hello students. My name is Frank. I was born in Boston in 1973. I have been in Japan on-and-off since 1997. I originally worked at a language school in Kawagoe, Saitama before moving to Tokyo in 2002. I have also briefly taught in Vietnam and Thailand. At the moment I work at two colleges in the Tokyo area and also write for the Daily Yomiuri. My writings have appeared in a numerous periodicals in Tokyo and I have had my articles translated into Korean, Chinese as well as Japanese. At the moment I live in Shinjuku with my gerbil, 'Stinky', and my goldfish, 'Henry'.
My hobby is skydiving. I look forward to helping you with your English.

I was born in London, England, but was raised since the age of two in Hawaii. I've spent a few years in California and Michigan studying music, and have lived in Japan for thirteen years. I have an eleven year old son who is bilingual.
I play guitar and write songs, you can listen to or even download MP3s of my songs at garageband.com/artist/steventroycoleman. Lately I haven't gigged, but sometimes I do play around Tokyo.
I also enjoy writing and blogging. You can see some of my articles on a website called "In-Japan." My best ability is in creative writing, particularly in poetry and lyrics.
I like almost all Japanese foods, but lately I’ve been trying to be fairly strict vegetarian (about 85 or 90 percent). I work as an English teacher, which constantly teaches me new things about my own language. I also as a wedding minister, and enjoy thinking about the spiritual dimension of our existence.

Before coming to Japan I lived on a farm in Ontario, Canada. I came to Japan after getting my degree in Philosophy to teach English. I am used to living in the country so the large city of Tokyo has been a bit of an adjustment. However, I have gotten used to it and now fondly call it 'home'. Among my primary interests are playing the guitar, learning about foreign cultures especially their religions, reading, philosophy, movies, video games and keeping fit by hiking and physical activity as well as sightseeing.

Hi everyone! I’m Leigh, 34 years old, and from Wales. I first came to Japan in 1997 and taught English for eight years both conversational and business English. I’ve also taught students of all ages in Switzerland and England. I enjoy teaching and helping anyone who’s keen to learn English.

Between May and November 2005, I rode through every prefecture of Japan on my bicycle. It was tough. Now I’m writing a book about my adventures.

Hello, Cameron here. I was born in Australia but my parents are from Malaysia. I've been in Japan now for just over a year and it's been the best year of my life, never before have I been so entertained. I came to Japan to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life, but have discovered so many more things that I love that I'm now more confused than ever (although my last boss once told me that I was the best dishwasher she had ever had so maybe that was a sign). I've loved every second of my time in Japan so far and I hope I'm here for many many more.

Hi! I'm Martyn and I'm from sunny South Wales. I first came to Japan to teach English in April 1997. I lived in Saitama for 2 years and then moved to Kanagawa for 2 years. During this time, I thoroughly enjoyed teaching a wide spectrum of Japanese society, from kindergarten students through to Manager Directors of multinationals: it taught me a lot!
In April 2001, I returned to the UK with my wife and our 11 month old son. We had two daughters in Wales (July 2001 and February 2006) and returned to Japan, for them to experience the Japanese half of their heritage, in January 2008.

I was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia when I was nearly five years ago. I grew up in Melbourne - a beautiful 'European style' city. I became interested in Japan during the 1980s. Japan was always in the news back then, and many people were fascinated by it. When I was twenty eight years old, I decided that I wanted to live overseas for a year. I had somefriends who were teaching English in Japan, and they convinced ne to come. My plan was for a year. Sixteen years later I'm still here. I guess that means I love Japan.

私はニュージランド生まれで、５歳のときにオーストラリアに引っ越してきて、美しいヨーロッパ調の街、メルボルンで育ちました。　１９８０年代に日本に興味を持ち始めました。　その当時は何に関しても新しく、たくさんの人がこの国に魅了されていました。　２８歳のときに１年間海外で暮らしたいと思っていました。　何人かの友人が日本で英語を教えていて、彼らに来るように説得されたのです。　そのときは１年間の滞在予定でしたが、　１６年後の今、まだ日本にいます。　私がたいそう日本を気に入っている証拠です。

I grew up in New Zealand, but have lived in other countries, such as: The UK, USA and Australia. My first direct experience with Japan was at Junior High School when I took a basic course in Japanese. My “sensei” was really cool , fun and relaxed., but due to moving to a different town and school I never got to complete the course and had to take French instead. However, Japan was something embedded in me from that very first time on… I've been teaching in Japan for almost 8 years. I have learnt many things along the way as a person and as a teacher. We are all humans, but we all want and expect different things, so when it comes to teaching I feel it is essential to be ones self with a touch of fun, diplomacy and tact. Students learn better when they feel that what they are receiving is of the highest caliber , with someone that knows what they are doing, and when they feel relaxed and confident. So, I m always myself and try to the best of my ability to meet what students request when it comes to learning English.
