The Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede is a 10 day festival and rodeo that is held in July in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada. It's like stepping into the old west when people rode horses and
wore cowboy hats and boots, and bolo ties.In fact, most offices in Calgary allow
staff to dress western (jeans and embroidered shirts) during the Stampede.
Throughout the city, at many shopping malls and community centers you can have a
free "stampede breakfast." Volunteers serve pancakes and other breakfast goodies
to anyone who comes along. The whole city has a very festive atmosphere. On the
actual Stampede grounds, you can go to the rodeo and see a lot of exciting events
like calf roping, bull riding, and chuckwagon races. There is also an exhibition
area where you can see animals and all kinds of things related to farming and
agriculture. The most popular place for many people is the midway where you can
go on rides like merry-go-rounds and roller coasters or eat all the great festival
junk food like cotton candy and caramel apples. At night, you can listen to live
country and western music as well. There are so many fun things to do, many people
hit the grounds several times during the ten day event. One of my favorite things
at the Calgary Stampede is the Indian (First Nations) Village where you can enjoy
all things related to the First Nations People of Canada including tradition dress,
art, crafts, music, and food. It's a fascinating place. So, if you ever plan to
visit the Rocky Mountains is Canada during the summer, try to plan your trip so you
can spend some time at the Calgary Stampede. You can get a taste of life in the
old west in Canada.
