Many people would say that cherry blossoms are the sign of spring in Japan. However, I prefer the 'iris' ( 'ayame' (菖蒲) in Japanese). I never really feel like spring is here until I see my first 'iris'. I just love them. To me, they look like something from another world. They seem to take away the cold winter air and welcome spring. I know it's all in my head, but for some reason, whenever I see one, I hear 'Spring is here!' An iris is like a splash of color on the dull gray of winter. I believe my feeling comes from the meaning of the name. 'Iris' is actually Greek for 'rainbow' (it's also the name of the Greek goddess of rainbows). I'm already out looking for my first 'iris' this year.
