What helped you become the person you wanted to be?

I always wanted to someone who continually improved in my work. When I was a
graduate student, one of my friends was studying at Art College to become an illustrator.
She practiced drawing every single day, copying the works of famous artists as well as
creating her own designs. Over four or five years, I saw the quality of her work improve
dramatically. This helped me realize that to be good at something, you have to practice,
and even if you cannot see the difference yourself, over time, you will improve.
I want to be a good author, but I cannot wait for the perfect story to appear. Instead
I must write every day, even when I don't want to. In movies and on television, people
make rapid progress very quickly. In real life, it takes more time.
